FREM seeks to do two things: to introduce students to some of the great texts of English-language modernist literature, as to modernism more widely; and to help them gain a clearer idea of what M1-type research is, and how it can be conducted.

The texts to be studied are: the first four chapters of James Joyce's Ulysses (1922); T.S. Eliot, The Waste Land (1922); Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse (1927).
