This course looks at moments in the history of English-language poetry at which particular formal devices were introduced. It encourages students to read and to take pleasure in a wide variety of British and American poetry, from the beginnings to the mid twentieth century, and to approach questions of poetic form from aesthetic, critical and historical perspectives.
